Providing a Conducive Environment
My philosophy of education is that every learner has
the inner desire to learn new things. This desire is often hampered by ward
culture, bureaucracy and lack of support. It is my aim to provide the necessities
needed to enhance the learner's ability to flourish in their environment. I
have a strong belief that leaners are able to reach their full potential when
fundamental knowledge and skills are shared in a non-biased and conducive environment.
This sharing of knowledge and skills are influential in providing high quality
patient centered care, which is underpinned by our nursing code of conduct and professional
standards.
New Clinicians & Reflection
As a seasoned clinician and novice educator, I understand the significance of reflection in improving our practice. Reflection is often underutilised in our daily clinical lives. Part of my teaching philosophy is focused greatly on the reflective cycle and how beneficial it can be for our practice. Within the current landscape of clinical education, I have an understanding that previous methods of didactic learning will need to be improved upon. 21st Century learners are a new generation of clinicians that respond differently to previous methods of teaching, as such I am an advocate of using new technologies in meeting their learning needs.

A word from myself.
My Objective
The perioperative field is often an intense workplace. Junior staff often do not receive the adequate feedback and encouragement that may be necessary to foster their clinical practice. My personal objective is to become the kind of educator who can mentor and foster the next generation of nurses. I am passionate about continuing education in the form of degrees, self-directed learning and extracurricular learning opportunities; these also form a core component of my own educational career. I believe that learners are always seeking new knowledge and skills, educators just have to understand how to deliver this knowledge and guide learning.
My Experience
Due to my varied experiences in the perioperative field, I encourage learners to think critically, communicate effectively and frequently reflect on the patient's perioperative journey. As a Scrub/scout, Anaesthetic and Recovery Nurse, I am in an excellent position to advise new graduate nurses in the broad spectrum that is the perioperative nursing field. Often times, educators are of one specialty and as such, can only provide education within their specialty. Due to my experiences I am able to facilitate learning throughout the perioperative service. This creates a foundational knowledge base that learners can draw upon to improve their patient centered care skills.
